Neal Crumley has announced today, on his 37th birthday, that he is ready to retire.
The Isle of Man Sprinter, having ridden 20 times for the national team, had long been Fox River’s “2nd Captain”, having been part of the squad’s original recruits upon formation.
At the time, as a youngster, Crumley had shown great potential as lead-out for legend Herman Kavanagh, with excellent technical abilities. Over his many seasons of racing, he proved to be reliable not just as lead-out, but as a captain himself, especially on the high technical sprints that Fox River has favored over the years.
Having got his first result in a U23 race back in season 52 (Grand Cayman), Crumley’s biggest victories came in the famous Coppa della Famiglia del Don, where he memorably won with a solo breakaway in Stage 1 in season 60, and then, after having made the podium once before, won the sprint stage (Ede - Apeldoorn) in season 63.
Barring an incredible last few races, Crumley will finish his riding career, with 4 victories and 14 results, spanning from Division 6 all the way to Division 2.
It is widely expected that Crumley will join the coaching staff at Fox River, though he may take a few seasons away from the cycling world to return home to Isle of Man.
